Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart Books Sir Robert Hamilton Bruce Lockhart (1887-1970), British diplomat, journalist, author, and secret agent, was born at Anstruther on 2 Sep 1887, son of Robert Bruce Lockhart of Waid Academy At age 21 he went out to Malaya to join his 2 uncles who were rubber planters there. Having successfully passed the examination for the British Secret Service, he was posted to Moscow in 1912, and was acting Consul-General in Moscow for much od the 1st World War from 1914 to 1917. He was present when the Feb Revolution took place early in 1917, but left shortly before the Bolshevik Revolution of Oct 1917. In Jan 1918 at the bequest of the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, he returned to Russia as the UK’s first envoy to Bolshevik Russia. In 1918, with the British agent, Sydney Reilly, they were both alleged to have plotted to assassinate Vladimir Lenin, and were both sentenced to be shot, but boys escaped execution and escaped. Lockhart wrote about his experiences in Malaya and Russia in his autobiography, Memoirs of a British Agent published in 1932, which became an international best seller, and whose chapters on Russia and the Russian Revolution were turned into a Warners Film, B British Agent in 1934. A second volume of autobiography, Retreat from Glory, was published. In 1934. In the 1930s he began to release number of books, which were successful enough to allow him to to take up writing as a full-time career.
