(A Moment in Time)
The items in this article are not necessarily of great value, but have been chosen for their intrigue- a moment in time…
Occasionally, often when not really looking, Bowler and Binnie Auctions come across something of note- a glance back into history, a moment in time. In this article I will talk of two such items that invoke our interest and let us look back into history and focus in on people’s lives and their achievements. These two unique items tell their own story and it’s been a pleasure looking into two remarkable lives.

Nigel Tranter (First 4 Photos are linked to this article)

Nigel Tranter was probably the most prolific Scottish author after Sir Walter Scott. He published over 100 historical novels and many non-fiction books such as The Queen’s Scotland series. Born in Glasgow, he spent much of his life in Aberlady, which he loved.
We are auctioning a signed manuscript of a Kettle of Fish (With Original Thoughts and Ideas)
This fictional story is based on the 1857, Tweed Fisheries Act that made it illegal to fish for Salmon in 50 square miles of open sea off the mouth of the River Tweed. A local schoolmaster, Adam Horsburgh, believed the Act should be challenged openly and when he proceeds to act, a full-scale fish war breaks out. This book stands the test of time, it is still on sale 50 years after its first publication and its message echoes in today's politics.

Nigel Tranter was born in Glasgow, Scotland on November 23, 1909. He was educated at the George Heriot's School in Edinburgh. He wrote over 120 works of historical fiction. Furthermore, he also wrote 14 westerns under the pen name Nye Tregold and 13 children's books. Tranter had his own historical program on Scottish television entitled Towers of Strength. Nigel sadly died from flu on January 9t, 2000 at the age of 90.

My Second item of interest is directly connected to Mr Philip Kappel, renowned 'America Etcher and Artist' Born in Hartford, Connecticut and graduated from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Philip Kappel
Being auctioned on 29th January 2022 are a series of Signed Etchings in personalised Christmas Cards, Letters, Photos, and a Book. The letters and Christmas Cards show the personal side to Kappel. One of the cards being sent on the death of Kappel's wife (some or all the etchings may not have been published before).

Original Photograph of Phillip Kappel with personalised messages on reverse [1950].
Kappel was employed as an artist by several American steamship lines and made six trips around the World on sailing vessels to gather themes and ideas for his etchings which are held by major American museums and the Biblotheque National in Paris.

[An Original signed Christmas Greeting with an etching inside each letter].

Kappel’s artwork constitutes a working record of the American shipping industry at its peak. Kappel received many awards for his art and was the author of several books, one of which is shown above. Philip Kappel died in 1981. All pictures show items that will be sold in our upcoming auction forty-one years after Phillip Kappel’s death, a fitting tribute to a wonderful artist..
